Quick & Easy Christmas Cards and Tags with Digital Cut Files | A Silhouette Cameo Tutorial

Yes, I know Christmas is next week, but some of us are running just a little behind on Christmas cards and tags. At least I hope I'm not the only one! If you are with me, then the card and tag tutorial that I'm sharing today, using your Silhouette Cameo and the Christmas Cheer & Winter Wishes Digital Cut File by 17turtles, is just for you!

Here are just two of the Christmas cards and tags that I created.

A SILHOUETTE CAMEO TUTORIAL | QUICK & EASY CHRISTMAS CARDS AND TAGS

Begin by opening up the Christmas Cheer & Winter Wishes Cut File in your Silhouette software. Of course, you don't have to use this exact image to create cards. Any simple frame shape will work!

Select the image you want to use for your card front and copy it.

Select one of the copied images, right click on it and select Release Compound Path.

When you look at the image closely you will see that it has filled in the blank spaces.

Click on the image, selecting the outside of the shape (which will be a solid square) and move it down on the screen. This will separate the images as you see below. Select the image with the words and delete it. You do not need this piece any more. The solid square piece is going to become the back of your card.

Before we do anything else, let's create the piece that will be placed behind the card front (this is the patterned paper piece that you see in the card examples). Select the square image and copy it. And move it to the side.

Now, let's go back to creating the card. Take the solid square and place it above the piece that is the front of the card, making sure to line them up.

With the solid square image selected, move it down a few clicks to overlap it onto the front of the card. Select both images, right click and select Weld. If the images are not overlapped enough, the images will not weld, so make the red line between the images disappears..

Once the weld is complete, your card is ready to cut. Before we continue farther though, let's go back to the copied square image that we created earlier. (I have now made it green for you to be able to see it better.)

Select that green square and click on the Scale Tool located at the top of the Toolbar. Using the Custom Scale option, adjust it to 95.0%.

As you can see, this makes the green square just slightly smaller than the card front so that you don't have to worry about any paper overlapping or showing when you go to layer the papers.

You are now ready to cut and assemble your cards. Just remember to move the green square off of the cutting mat area while you cut the card base. As you can see, I used plain white cardstock to create the card base and then used a mostly solid patterned paper so that the image would show up nicely. I used this same technique to create a couple of gift tags as well.

Welding Letters | A Silhouette Cameo Tutorial

Do you want to learn more about how to use some of the fun features on the Silhouette Cameo Electronic Cutting Machine? Would you like to learn how to create your own custom titles and word art? How about learning to weld the letters together to create an all in one title? If your answer is yes to any of these questions, then the Welding Letters tutorial that I am sharing with you today is perfect for you!

WELDING LETTERS | A SILHOUETTE CAMEO TUTORIAL

Begin by selecting the Text button located along the left hand side of the screen (the one with the letter A on it). This will open the Text Style window on the right hand side of the screen. Next, scroll through the Font Style and select the font you want to use for your title.

Once you have selected your font, type out the word or words you want to use for your title. In this example I am showing you how to do this with just one word. I would recommend doing one word at a time. You can always weld the words together later.

After you have typed your word, left click and select the text. Then, right click and select Ungroup.

This allows you to be able to move each letter around individually so that you can move them close enough together that you can weld them into one piece. Once you have moved the letters until they are slightly overlapping, left click and select all of the letters. Then right click and select Weld.

I thought the letters were overlapping enough however, when I looked at the word after clicking on Weld, I realized that the E was not connected to the V. If this happens to you, click on the Undo Arrow (located on the left side of the top tool bar) to undo the weld. Move the E until it is overlapping more, select all of the letters, right click and the select Weld.

Now all of the letters are one little happy welded family ready for you to cut out and use as one piece on your project.

If you are interested in doing more than one word, repeat this same process with the second word. Then move the two words until they are overlapping and weld them together.

So welding letters is super easy peasy right?! Now that you know how, you can start creating your own custom scrapbook titles using some of your favorite fonts. Happy Welding!!!

The very talented Leanne Allinson was recently a guest on the blog and I really adored the way she took my Pie Chart Love Digital Cut File and filled it with beautiful papers on her Simple Awesome layout. Her layout inspired me to create a tutorial to share with you on how to create your own inlaid backgrounds with digital cut files. I will warn you this is a long tutorial and the process of filling in background die cut images can be time consuming. However, I really believe that the end result is worth the effort. Especially if you love playing with pretty paper!

Inlaid Backgrounds with Digital Cut Files | A Silhouette Cameo Tutorial

In this tutorial, I will show you how to create an inlaid background similar to the one created by Leanne Allison. This tutorial will help you decide what colors and/or patterns of paper to use and how to cut out all of the pieces that are from the same color or pattern.

Begin by opening the digital cut file background image with the Silhouette Software.

Open the Fill Color Palette. Do this by clicking on the small bucket image on the tool bar at the top.

Select the image and then pick the color you want to change it too. We are using the image that Leann created as a guide. Since she cut the main image from white cardstock, I choose to fill the image with white. Once you have the image selected and have clicked on the color you want it to be, it will change to that color.

Select all of the hearts and move them off to the side. Once they are off of the main cutting area, your cutting machine will not cut them. Now cut the background image from white cardstock, remove it from the cutting mat and set it to the side.

The next step is to begin selecting what colors or patterns of paper you want to use to fill each of the openings in the pie charts. But first, select the image, right click and select Release Compound Path. This will release the inside pie shapes so that you can add color to them and cut out the individual shapes.

Once you have clicked on Release Compound Path, all of the images will turn the same color.

Now, begin selecting which shapes you want to be the same color. Use the Fill Color Palette to once again change this color to the color that you want the shape to be. By making them the same color, this will let you know which images you want to group together to cut from the same paper.

Continue selecting the different shapes and adding colors. Each of the colors will correspond to a different color of paper or even a patterned paper that you want to use.

Once you have all of the images filled with color, select the entire image filled image, create a new file and copy the image to this new file. You will use this as a reference for filling the image later after you have finished all of the cutting. ***It might even be a good idea to save this image just to be on the safe side.

Next, return to the hearts that you had moved off of the mat. Selected all of them and give them a color.

With all of the hearts selected, drag them back onto the mat to see how they look with the rest of your design. Make any adjustments to the colors that you want at this time.

Now select the hearts again, move them off of the mat and group them together to make it easier for cutting. You will save paper by placing the images close together that you will cut from the same paper.

The next step is to begin selecting all of the shapes with the same color and move them off to the side of the cutting area.

Continue to group the same colors together. Keep the images like the ones that I have circled together. This way if you cut them from paper with a pattern it will all match.

Repeat this entire process with each of the colors until they have all been removed from the cutting area. You will then be left with the background image. Select this image and delete it because you no longer need it.

The final step is to select the group of same colors and place the group onto the cutting area. Adhere the paper you are going to use with that group to your cutting mat and cut out the shapes. After you have finished cutting that group, remove the group from the cutting area and repeat with another group. Continue this process until all of your shapes are cut out.

Once you have cut out all of the colors/patterns, use the image that you copied and saved to help you put the "puzzle" back together. It will take some time to do this, but be patient. The finished project will be worth the effort!

Creating Offset Titles | A Silhouette Cameo Tutorial

Fall is finally here. The leaves are changing and the temperatures are getting cooler. I love the colors of fall, but not what comes next...winter! So how about we focus on something that we can love all year long? Today, I'm sharing a quick Silhouette Cameo tutorial on how to create an offset title. I was inspired to put this tutorial together because of the awesome Bone Sweet Bone Scrapbook Page that Katrina Hunt recently shared here on 17turtles. She used one of the titles from my Puppy Love Digital Cut File and I loved how she created an extra layer to help the title stand out on her layout.

CREATING OFFSET TITLES

To create an offset title begin by opening your title image and re-size it to your desired dimensions.

Next, locate the Offset Window in your tool bar.

Click on this button to open the Offset Window.

To create the offset for your title, select your title image and the click on Offset. You can also adjust the amount of offset (which is the distance that is around the image) by sliding the blue arrow, typing in the number or using the small up/down arrows. Once you are satisfied with the amount of offset, click apply.

Now that you have your offset, you will want to separate the images before you begin cutting. Select the offset image and drag it away from the title image. Position the images on the mat as desired and you are now ready to cut.

Thankful Pumpkins Digital Cut File Juliana Michaels 17turtles

Happy Monday all! I hope you had a great weekend. Fall is coming. At least that is what the calendar says. However, the temperature outside right now says it's still summer. Either way, I thought it would be fun to share a quick tutorial with you about how to use one of my layered digital cut files called Thankful Pumpkins, available in my 17turtles Etsy Shop. These fun layered pumpkins should certainly help get you in the mood for cooler weather, pumpkin spice latte's and falling leaves.

USING LAYERED CUT FILES

When you first open Thankful Pumpkins Digital Cut File in your Silhouette software this is the image you will see. This file contains 3 titles and 3 layered pumpkins with stems and vines.

Select the titles and move them off of the main cutting mat area. Did you know that if you move something off of the central cutting mat, that your machine will not cut it?

Select the stems and vines and move them out of the way as well.

Now begin separating the layers of each pumpkin. You will see that each of the pumpkins has four layers that can be separated and cut from different colors and patterns.

Once all of the layers are separated, you can then select which pieces you want to cut from whatever colors and patterns you choose. Group the pieces together that you want to cut from the same thing and keep them on your mat to cut.

WELDING LAYERED CUT FILES

Another option for you, if you don't want to do layers, is to Weld them. There are 2 ways to do this. One is to use your mouse to select all of the layers for that pumpkin.

Right click on the image with your mouse and select Weld from the list of options.

The second option is to remove the top 3 layers and move them out of the way.

Select both the stem and the bottom layer with your mouse. Then right click and select Weld.

Repeat the welding process with all 3 pumpkins using whichever method you prefer.

BACKGROUNDS

One final use that I want to share is how to create die cut backgrounds. I also shared this same technique last week on my Four Ways to Use Leaves & Acorn Digital Cut File Tutorial. Begin by positioning all of the welded images in a group. Select all of the images and resize them as a group to a smaller size. Right click with your mouse and select Copy and then Paste.

Move this copied image into a different location on the mat. Repeat until the mat is filled and then rotate and move the images around until you like the placement of them.

So there you have it. Some fun new ways to use a layered digital cut file. Does this make you stop and look at your digital cut files a little differently now?
