Flourishes with a Punch

Today I am going to share with you a quick tutorial on how I created a bunch of swirls and flourishes from one simple punch.  Keep reading for all the details, but first up I must say...I fear I am moving to the land of snow & ice! At least compared to anywhere I have ever lived!!! If you currently have some of this wonderful stuff on the ground, grab your camera, take some photos and then scrap them with the gorgeous Powder Mountain collection by Bo Bunny.  It is the perfect collection for capturing these memories & special moments or for some creative play.  The play part is what I wanted to do after seeing this adorable photo taken by our dear friend Tom McInerney. He is an an amazing photographer and has a gorgeous Samoyed name Mia. He recently took a photo of her out in the snow with a life size snow dog that he made. I tell you he is so clever & creative! Anyway, as soon as I saw the photo I begged for a copy so that I could scrap it with this collection.  Here is the layout I created! I had a great time playing with this collection as well as having fun misting and stamping.  I used some of my new Heidi Swapp Color Shine to lightly mist the background and then I stamped on the back ground using some of the Powder Mountain snowflake stamps with Ranger Distress Ink.

The snowflakes are leftover from when I created my Let It Snow layout for Bella Blvd that you can see HERE.

The fun technique I want to share with you is how I used a border punch to create the red swirls/flourishes that you see placed on the layout.  All of them were created using one punch: the Rose Bush 2 in 1 Edger punch by EK success.

Punch two 12 inch strips from cardstock using the chain punch setting.

To create the strip under my photo, trim one end like this on one of the strips.

Then trim the other end like this.

After trimming each end this is the piece you will end up with. See the nice curved edges!

To create the other random flourishes trim various sections of the other strip like this.

Cut the pieces to "free" the swirls that are connected to each other.

Look closely..I have trimmed two swirls free!!!

Here are all the different swirls & flourished that I created from just one strip of cardstock!!!  I placed these at various locations on the layout to help create a visual triangle.

Rusted Metal Chipboard Tutorial

Happy Monday Ya'll!  I am in a bit of a western mood as I bring today's post to you. You see, I have a tutorial to share with you on how to make chipboard look like rusted metal!  Why rusted metal you ask?  It started off with some photos of Danny & Woody and this super awesome Barbed Wired Border Chipboard from Leaky Shed Studio.  The chipboard just called out to be rusted up a bit so that it looked like the real thing! KWIM?!?!  I did a little searching on line, but I didn't really find what I was looking for so I decided to play around with the supplies I have on hand and this is what I came up with.

Here is a look at the rusted metal!

I played around on a scrap of chipboard until I came up with what I was looking for.  I mostly played around with different colors of acrylic paint.

SUPPLIES:
1.  FolkArt Raspberry Wine Aryclic Paint (this is a reddish brown color - so in my opinion you don't really need this specific color to recreate this look. just use what you have or even mix it yourself using a bit of brown and red)
2.  FolkArt Pure Black Aryclic Paint
3.  FolkArt Metallic Pure Gold Aryclic Paint
4.  FolkArt Metallic Pure Silver Aryclic Paint
5.  Metallic Rubons by Craf-T Products in Gold and Ruby (I am not sure that this company still exists, but I was able to find them online in several places. I have had mine for years & years.)
6.  Ranger Distress Ink in Walnut Stain
7.  Chipboard
8.  Heat Tool/Gun

INSTRUCTIONS:
1.  Dab Pure Black paint onto the chipboard with your finger.
2.  Dab Raspberry Wine paint onto the chipboard with your finger on top of the black.  Do not try to totally cover the black. Just dab it on and go.
3.  Now heat it with your heat tool.  Hold the heat tool very close to the surface and heat until the paint starts to bubble. This gives it a super cool texture!
4.  Next dab some of the Metallic Gold and Silver paint on with your finger.
5.  Heat this with the heat tool until it bubbles.
6.  Rub a little bit of the Ruby and Gold Metallic Rubons onto the surface.
7.  Then rub your Walnut Stain Distress Ink pad on top of this.
8.  You now have rusted metal chipboard!!!

A FEW TIPS TO SHARE:
1.  Work in small sections so that you can heat the paint and get it to bubble. If the paint is slightly thick and still wet it will bubble better
2.  You need a heat tool that gets really hot for this.  The Heat Tool by Ranger does NOT work. I tried it.  I had to use my old Marvy Uchida one and I had to be careful not to burn my fingers which is why I got the Ranger one just recently! LOL!!! Thank goodness, I did not get rid of my old one! LOL!!!
3.  Do not be afraid of making a mess.

Here you can see some of the detail and how it looks up close.

Now for a few more details about the layout. I am loving stars right now and when I saw these Heidi Swapp Sequin Shapes they went right into my shopping basket!

The black "together" is a sticker by Heidi Swapp that is part of her Buzz Words.  They are really thin and delicate, but I love them.  I layered this on top of the word "together" that I cut using my Silhouette and the Aharoni font.  I typed the letters, ungrouped them and moved each letter around individually until I liked its placement making sure that each letter was touching.  I then grouped them together and welded them before I cut them.

Do you spy The Crafter's Workshop Star Shower Stencil in the background?  I inked each star with Distress Ink in Vintage Photo and then colored over this on the larger stars with Distress Stain in Picket Fence.  I then traced the larger stars using my new favorite pen Uniball Vision.  Finally I used an Elmer's Painters Marker in white to add another outline to the star shape.

Layout Supplies:
Patterned Paper & Stickers: Pebbles Walnut Groove
Buttons: American Crafts & Cosmo Cricket
Eyelets: We R Memory Keepers
Sequin Star & Word Sticker: Heidi Swapp
Star Template: The Crafter's Workshop
Die Cut Machine: Silhouette
Font: Aharoni
Chipboard: Leaky Shed Studios

I hope you enjoyed today's tutorial and layout! Thanks so much for stopping by!

What BRIGHT means to me

Of course, this first week of the new year causes all of us to reflect on our life a little.  For me it has been more than a little. I have been doing quite a lot of this lately.  I have had so many changes in my life these past few months because of our upcoming move.  I have reflected on all aspects of my life, including the direction I want to move with my life.  I feel like a clean slate has been placed before me and I have some choices to make as to how to fill that slate.  One thing I know for sure is that I want to focus more on my creative passion for scrapbooking, art, and crafting.  Mostly however, as I reflect on what my OLW means to me, I realize how much I want to be the definition of BRIGHT in my own life and to try to reflect that BRIGHTNESS onto the world around me. So with that being said here are some images and words for thought.

The definition of BRIGHT from Meriam-Webster.com:
bright | adjective
1 a : radiating or reflecting light : shining, sparkling <bright lights> <bright eyes>
  b : sunny <a bright day>; also : radiant with happiness <bright smiling faces> <bright moments>
2 : illustrious, glorious <brightest star of the opera>
3 : beautiful
4 : of high saturation or lightness <bright colors>
5 a : lively, cheerful <be bright and jovial among your guests — Shakespeare>
  b : intelligent, clever <a bright idea> <bright children>
6 : auspicious, promising <bright prospects for the future>

I plan to use these words & images and my word BRIGHT to remind me of the direction I want to travel and the things I want to be and do in this coming year.  Hopefully I will get my art journal page for BRIGHT finished and I as soon as I do I will share it with you. Until then...

BRIGHT | One Little Word 2013

As you can see, my one little word for 2013 is... BRIGHT.

I saw this word on a scrappy layout somewhere online. Not sure where or whose layout it was. But the word spoke to me...it stuck with me...and I looked it up in the dictionary. I liked what I read. It seemed like the perfect word to use to describe how I want 2013 to be for me. I want it to be BRIGHT in every way possible.  I am looking forward to the future and you better believe I will be wearing my shades!!!

p.s. I choose the green to represent the Pantone 2013 Color of the Year...EMERALD. I am super pumped about this color...I love green!!!

My Project 365 | 2013

I am finally going to give this Project 365 thing a try.  This new adventure should be doable, unless I just happen to forget one day. Hopefully that won't happen!  I am planning to take all of the photos with my Android phone.  I don't have an Iphone, so I can't use the Project365 app.  Instead I found an online service called ShutterCal.  It also has an Iphone app...not sure why no one has an Android app...but oh well!  This one works with my phone because I can download the images from my phone to their website.  They have a calendar feature to let you know what day you are on and you can add your photos later if you want.  The only bummer is you can't print the calendar page as you see it. I would love it if they had that feature. Instead, they do have a print service where they will print each image with the info you provide such as the date and any description and package them in these awesome "shoeboxes"!

Super cute concept, but not exactly what I am looking for as I said.  I really want the calendar thing after seeing how what my scrap pal Kristine Davidson did with hers from last year.  You can what she did HERE.
So are you playing along with some version of this?  I am not so sure about the Project Life thing yet, but there is always next year right?  One step at a time!!!
HUGS!!!
