Butterfly Frenzy Digital Cut File Tutorial and Scrapbook Layout

Hello all and Happy Day Before InterNational Scrapbook Day! Today I'm sharing a layout I created with a new digital cut file I created especially for Creative Scrappers called Butterfly Frenzy. Creative Scrappers is a fabulous scrapbook sketch and inspiration site founded and coordinated by Kristine Davidson. I have been a fan of her sketches for a long time and I was even a sketch designer for her design team in the past. I recently learned that she was starting her site back up and I'm really looking forward to all the great sketches and inspiration that will be coming in the very near future. To help Creative Scrappers celebrate InterNational Scrapbook Day, I created the Butterfly Frenzy Digital Cut File. Below you will find a link to download the file for free.

Now, read on for a tutorial on backing die cuts with patterned paper using the Butterfly Frenzy cut file.

As you can see, I backed some of the butterflies with a variety of patterned papers. I love this look and it's a great way to dig into your paper stash.

Backing Die Cuts Tutorial

First cut the Butterfly Frenzy image from your desired piece of paper. Remove it from the cutting mat and lay to the side. I used simple white cardstock. Now it's time to have some fun and decide which papers to use to fill the openings.

I don't know about you, but I'm a very visual person, so it really helps for me to see what I'm thinking about doing before I cut into my papers. To help me decide which papers to use, I used the following technique:
1. Open the Butterfly Frenzy Cut File in the Silhouette software.
2. Right click on the image and select Release Compound Path.
(You will notice a couple of sections that are filled that that you might not want filled in. These won't impact the final cut design, but if you want to remove them here is what to do: Select those sections and the piece that is the background together, right click and then select Make Compound Path. Some of the butterflies may disappear, but they are just behind this piece. Select the image you just made, right click and select Move to Back and all the butterflies will reappear.)
3. Open the Fill Color Window or the Fill Pattern Window.
4. Select each butterfly and fill it with a color or pattern similar to the papers you are thinking about using.

Feel free to play around with the colors and patterns until you like the position of them. I used patterns and color similar to ones I thought I wanted to use that are from Elle's Studio Little Moments collection.

5. Once you are happy with the colors/patterns and their positions, group each of the colors/patterns together.  Move one group of colors onto the Silhouette cutting area. Place the other groups off of the cutting area.

6. Select the group, right click and select Offset from the drop down menu. The Offset Window will open.

7. With the objects still selected, click on Offset. Set the distance to 0.1 Round. Click on Apply.

8. Select the images and their offset, right click and select Weld. This will make each butterfly just slight larger and the perfect size for backing each of the openings.

9. Send the images through the Silhouette and cut them out of your desired paper.
10. Repeat steps 6 - 9 with each group of colors/patterns.

This is the back side of the cut file with the offset images in place. As you can see, the offset images perfectly fit to fill the openings. I know a lot of people hand cut their papers to fill the openings, but to me, this process is much faster and easier.

Here is a view of the cut file from the front. I really do love how the butterflies look filled with the different papers. I even decided to leave some of the butterflies empty and let the background paper show through.

This new book features over 120 12x12" sketches and inspiration from 60 international designers including myself! This book is full amazingly talented designers and I'm so excited among them.

Today, I'm sharing the layout that is in Volume 3. It is about a trip to the Cleveland Zoo with my nieces last year to see the Dinosaur exhibit. They were fascinated by the life size dinosaurs. It was definitely "dinomite"!

To create this layout, I used Pink Paislee's Solstice collection including some of the patterned papers, ephemera and gold foam stickers. I also used 17turtles Digital Cut File Circles Within Circles and a hand drawn title for further embellishment.

Creative Scrappers #250

Today I am sharing the layout I created using Creative Scrappers Sketch #250. I am saddened that Creative Scrappers is taking a little break, but I know Kristine will come back with something amazing and inspiring and I can't wait to see what it is!  Until then, we will have Creating With Sketches Volume 2 to enjoy and it is being published on March 5.

I used the new Jillibean Soup Chilled Watermelon Soup collection. The Pea Pod Parts are really cute and I found there to be plenty of fun shapes to work with!  I was also given the opportunity to work with My Favorite Things February release by Laina Lamb Designs.  I worked with both of her new stamps sets and dies and I loved them!!!

This was my first opportunity to work with products from this company and I was so pleased to see the quality of both the stamps and the dies!!!  The dies worked wonderfully with my Cuttlebug! I used the Notebook Paper die on one of the 3x4 images that I cut from the Bite Sized Bits patterned paper.

I then used the stamp from the set below and added my journaling.

And if this stamp set doesn't make you arrow lovers happy I don't know what will! I know I am addicted to this set right now!!!  Thanks again to Laina for this fabulous opportunity!!!

And here is the sketch...

Thanks so much for stopping by and make sure you head over to the Creative Scrappers blog to see how the other designers were inspired by this sketch!

Creative Scrappers Sketch #246

Happy Sunday everyone! I am so happy to see the sun shining this morning! I just wish the temperature outside matched!!!  It is a lovely 24 degrees F here today!  Just a little on the cold side for me!!!
Today I just wanted to quickly share my final sketch with Creative Scrappers. If you have not heard, Kristine made an announcement earlier last week that she will be taking a break for awhile with the blog. You can read her full announcement HERE. I know she doesn't want this to be a sad thing. She has accomplished so many great things in 5 years!!! But I will be just a little sad for a couple reasons. One, is that I have loved creating sketches for her and I will no longer have the opportunity to do this. The other is that I have looked forward to going to the Creative Scrappers blog every Sunday morning for so long for a wonderful dose of inspiration from her amazing designers. I know Kristine will take this break and do some wonderful things for herself and who knows what she will come up with for us!  I can't wait to see what it is!!! One thing that makes me happy for sure though is that she has announced that she is working on her next Sketch Book!  That should hold me and you other sketch lovers over for awhile anyway!!! For now though, let's enjoy today's sketch and make sure you stop by and check out the amazing layouts by the design team!!!

Hello Gesso & Plastic Sewing Canvas

OK! So who knew that I would find something so cool in the sewing section and my staff that I would use as a stamp and stencil?!?! I never would have dreamed of this, but as I was looking around at my local craft store I saw these round plastic sewing canvases and a light bulb came on!  I thought...hmmmm...these might be really cool to use as a stencil.  And then I remembered that I actually had some of these at home hiding somewhere.  So, I ran home, found them and started playing.  I shared this layout yesterday as my layout using my latest Creative Scrappers sketch.  This layout was the first thing I made with them.

At first, I thought I would use it as a stencil, but found out that I liked using it more as a stamp.  I applied gesso to the plastic and then laid it on my background paper with the painted side down.  When I removed it, I was left with this totally cool pattern!

Supplies:
Patterned Paper, Stickers: Pebbles Walnut Grove
Die Cuts: Silhouette Cameo(my own designs, font - Pacifico)
Twine: My Mind's Eye
Gesso: Liquitex
Ink: Ranger Distress Ink in Vintage Photo
Stencil: Plastic Sewing Canvas

I just love happy accidents & playing with my paper & paints!
I thank you so very much for stopping by today & I hope you will look at this old school craft supply in a new light! I know I am!!

Creative Scrappers | #233

I have another sketch up on the Creative Scrappers blog today and I can't believe this, but I actually played along with my own sketch this time. I don't get to do that very often,  but I particularly liked this sketch when I created it and so I just made the time to play along this time!
I have to admit that the final layout and what I envisioned before I started were not the same. But I think that is part of the creative process some times!
I used the Cocoa Daisy Aspen Grove Kit from October to create my layout.  I loved that kit!  The colors and patterns just made me happy and I also loved the alphas that came with it.  I added some things from my stash as well.  The stars template is from The Crafters Workshop and the wooden stars and camera are Studio Calico. I think I am addicted to those little bits right now!!!
I am particularly in LOVE with anything to do with stars too!
One thing I have definitely decided is that I want to do more stamping.  I haven't had the urge to do this for quite some time. I think mostly I get discouraged because of the ink.  I just can't seem to find a good quality ink that covers the stamps well.  I am never sure if it is stamp or ink.  If you have any thoughts on this topic I would LOVE to here them.  Can you help a "want to stamp girl" out?!

And here is the sketch!  I hope you can find the time to play along.  Make sure you link it up on the Creative Scrappers blog for a chance to win a prize from our November sponsor!

HUGS!!!
