The Traveling Professor and Friends

This past weekend I had a crafty weekend getaway at my dear friend Tracey from Garden of Grace. We had a wonderful time crafting the weekend away. While I was there, I was inspired to play along with the latest Simon Says Stamp Wednesday Challenge where the theme is travel/vacation.

May I introduce to you The Traveling Professor and Friends! Even though his friends might appear a bit frightful, they sure look dapper in their suit and hats. Wouldn't you agree? And of course, no trip would be complete without a suitcase packed with all the essentials!

I started this project by stamping the professor and his friends using Ranger Distress Archival Ink in Black Soot. I then colored in the images using Distress Ink. I tapped the ink pad onto my glass mat and used a water brush to apply the color to the stamped images. Once the coloring was completed, I fussy cut the images and inked the edges with a bit of Distress Ink in Frayed Burlap and Espresso.

Next, I mounted the images on to a distressed and inked Baseboard Frame. I backed the opening with a globe die cut from Gold Kraft Stock. I spritzed the die cut with water, wrinkled it, dried it with the Ranger Heat It Tool and then sanded it here and there. I then rubbed Distress Ink in Espresso over it. (All that work and you can barely see it! LOL)

To create the base for my project I began with a Tim Holtz Small Etcetera Tag and adhered several papers from the Etcetera Paper Pad. I then applied Distress Oxide in Antique Linen and Frayed Burlap to the papers, sprinkled them with a little water and dabbed them dry. I then applied Distress Ink in Espresso to the edges. I set this to the side to dry a little. I then applied Crazing Collage Medium over the papers and allowed them to dry. This didn't give me quite the look I was going for, so I then added Ranger Opaque Crackle Texture Paste to some of the edges and allowed this to dry. I used an Espresso Distress Crayon which I scribbled on to my glass mat and then applied with a wet brush. This allowed the color to get into the cracks.

On all of the metal pieces, I painted them with Prima Marketing Art Alchemy Acrylic Paint-Metallique in Gold Rush, Brass Hardware and Light Patina to give them an aged and distressed look.

To create the suitcase, I used a Vignette Box. I created a lid for the case using a piece of chipboard. I then attached it to the box using a piece of white cardstock. Once the lid was attached, I painted the edges of the box and lid with Distress Paint in Walnut Stain. I then covered the outside and inside of the suitcase with papers from the Etcetera Paper Pad. All of the edges were inked with Distress Ink and further distressing was added with Distress Oxide Ink as well. For the handle, I used a Word Key since I didn't have any Hardware Pulls. I actually love the way it turned out!!!

The straps on the suitcase are leather embossed paper from my dear friend Tracey's stash. I trimmed them to 11 x 0.5 inches and then inked them with Vintage Photo and Gathered Twigs Distress Ink. To finish off the straps, I added the eyelets and buckles. I then wrapped them around the suitcase and adhered them to the back, top and bottom of the vignette box. As I was putting this together, I realized I didn't have a good way to open and close the straps, so for now, the straps are held closed with Zots. I'm hoping to come up with a better solution, but if you have any suggestions, please feel free to share them!
