Rusty Grunge 3 Ways | Distress Kraft Stock + Seth Apter Embossing Folder & Dies

I’m so excited to wrap up my Rusty Grunge 3 Ways series with this final look—a softer, more earthy grunge full of color and bold texture.

For this version, we’re diving into Distress Kraft Stock. It’s the perfect base when you want that warm, worn-in look that still delivers all the rusty grungy vibes. I’m once again featuring the Seth Apter embossing folder along with a mix of his new Sizzix dies. And like in the first two videos, I took some inspiration from Tim Holtz’s techniques and added my own spin.

The background came together with plenty of layered color, grit, and splatter. And while the tones are more neutral and vintage compared to Parts 1 and 2, the texture is still bold and dimensional.
To finish it off, I used a mix of grungy die cuts—including a few butterflies (because let’s be honest, they’re one of my favorite embellishments ever!).

Rusty Grunge with Distress Metallic Kraft Stock | Industrial Texture with Seth Apter Embossing Folder and Dies

Welcome back to Part 2 of my Rusty Grunge 3 Ways series: Bold Texture. Moody Color. Endless Possibilities.

Today I’m diving into one of my absolute favorite surfaces for creating gritty, industrial effects: Distress Metallic Kraft Stock. This cardstock is amazing for adding a touch of shimmer to those rusted textures we love.

Once again, I’m using the new Seth Apter embossing folder from Sizzix, along with his bold new die designs and a tried-and-true favorite from Tim Holtz to finish the piece with layered embellishments. Tim’s recent technique demo sparked this entire project, and in this video, I’m sharing my spin on it.

  • Distress Metallic Kraft Stock
  • Seth Apter’s New Embossing Folder and Dies
  • Distress Paint
  • Distress Crayons
  • Distress Embossing Glaze

  • Distress Watercolor Cardstock for a bold, rusty oxidized effect
  • Kraft Stock for a deep, earthy patina look

THE RESULTS

This card is a rich mix of shiny metallics and rusty decay. The alchemy that happens when you apply paint and alcohol to Metallic Kraft Stock is seriously magical. Add in that bold blue butterfly, those die-cut layers, and the simple reminder—“Don’t forget to fly”—and it all just clicks.

Be sure to stay tuned for Part 3, where I’ll be working with Distress Kraft Stock for a softer, more earthy take on rusty grunge.

Rusty Grunge with Distress Watercolor Cardstock | Seth Apter Embossing Folder and Die Techniques

Have you seen Tim Holtz’s recent demo with the new A5 embossing folders? (If you missed it you can check it out HERE.) I was so inspired by the texture and techniques he shared that I had to try them out myself and in doing so have put together a 3-part video series I'm calling Rusty Grunge 3 Ways—Bold Texture. Moody Color. Endless Possibilities.

In this series, I’m putting my own spin on the grungy, industrial techniques Tim shared using Seth Apter’s new embossing folder and dies, along with a few of my favorite Tim Holtz supplies.

Tim Holtz A5 Embossing Folders – HUGE Folder, HUGE Possibilities!

Have you seen the new Tim Holtz A5 Embossing Folders? They’re larger than your standard embossing folders—which might leave you wondering: Can I actually use these to make cards?

The answer is a resounding YES! In fact, in my latest video, I’m sharing how you can get multiple cards from just one embossed panel. That’s right—more value, more texture, and more creative options from a single tool. But don’t worry—the techniques I’m sharing will work with ANY embossing folders you already have, no matter the size. So there’s no need to run out and buy the new ones.

WHY A5 EMBOSSING FOLDERS?

These folders are designed to emboss larger surfaces, which makes them perfect for bigger projects. But that doesn’t mean they’re only for home decor or journal pages. With just a few cuts and a little creative thinking, you can easily turn one embossed panel into two cards. It’s a great way to get more from your supplies!

A FUN TECHNIQUE TO TRY

In the video, I go beyond dry embossing and add a little mixed media flair with a gorgeous technique using heat embossing and Distress Sprays. This combo brings out all the beautiful details of the embossing and makes your background truly stand out.

You can go two ways with this:
  • Keep it simple and elegant with a monochromatic color scheme
  • Go bold and artsy with layered, vibrant color blends
Either way, you’ll get a unique, one-of-a-kind background every time.

Color Wheel Art Journal with Eileen Hull’s New Sizzix Color Wheel Collection

I'm so excited to share my latest project featuring the brand new Color Wheel Collection by Eileen Hull for Sizzix — now available! The color wheel theme, along with a gorgeous collaboration with Lindy’s Gang, totally inspired me to dive into creating an art journal. I had so much fun getting inky and experimenting with color while making both the cover and the inside pages.

CREATING THE COVER

I used the Handbound Journal Bigz Die to create the journal cover. I first adhered a piece of patterned paper to a sheet of Sizzix Mat Board with a double-sided adhesive sheet. Then I die-cut it using the Handbound Journal Bigz Die, repeating the process for both the front cover and spine. I trimmed the spine to fit and assembled everything using Super Tape for a sturdy hold.

INSIDE PAGES

Interestingly, I started by making the inside pages first! (Maybe not the traditional way, but it worked out beautifully. You just need to measure a little before you decide on what size to make the pages and you can always trim them down to size if needed. Which is what I ended up doing!) I scored and cut patterned papers and vellum sheets to fit the journal, then added layers of art using stamps, stencils, and dies.

COLOR AND DIE CUTTING DETAIL

For the vibrant colors, I played with the Lindy’s Gang Magicals on Distress Watercolor Paper. These are pigment powders that you add water to and can then used to create a colored medium for painting, adding splatters and more. I am by no means an expert as this is my first time using them, but they sure are  I used the Boho Dreams and Gypsy Vibes collections and painted one color per panel. After they dried, I die-cut the panels with the large color wheel from the Rainbow Wheels Die Set.
  • To keep the interior pieces in place while die cutting, I used Mint Tape.
  • I also die cut color wheels from black cardstock, and used the colorful inside pieces to fill in the black wheels for a stunning contrast throughout the journal.

EXTRA EMBELLISHMENTS

I also die-cut butterflies from the painted panels using the Bookmark, Pockets, and Toppers Die Set. For the stems I used patterned paper with the Fine Stems 01 Die Set.

STAMPING AND STENCILING PAGES

For the background designs on the stamped and stenciled pages I used:
  • Swatch Card Stamp Set
  • Fan Favorites Stamp Set
  • Bird Song Stamp Set
  • Plate and Pattern Stencil
I did some collage stamping directly onto the patterned papers with Black Soot Archival Ink, followed by a coat of clear gesso. This not only protected the paper but also allowed the Lindy's Gang Magicals to beautifully tint the stamped images, creating even more color and texture.

THE REST OF THE JOURNAL

Keep scrolling to take a look at the rest of the pages in the journal. As you will see, I used the same techniques throughout, to make it cohesive while sharing and swatching the various colors of the Lindy's Gang Magicals.

I loved every second of creating this art journal — it’s such a celebration of color, creativity, and Eileen’s new collection!

If you love vibrant colors and mixed media, you’ll definitely want to check out the Color Wheel Collection — available now!
