With Father's Day coming this weekend, I sat down the other day to create a special card for my Dad. I was inspired by a card I came across on Instagram by Sylvia Grove. I started off pulling out some similar supplies, but during the process I ended up going a completely different direction because I wanted to add a little grunge. In the end, I created this oxidized metal background for my card and today I want to share the process with you.
Here's a look at the card by Sylvia that started it all. As you can see, other than the theme and colors I ended up with a very different looking card. But, I thought it might be fun for me to share with you how I can be inspired by other card makers. Sometimes the littlest thing can get the creative wheels spinning! OXIDIZED METAL TECHNIQUE
I began with a piece of Metallic Kraftstock in silver and embossed it using the Tim Holtz Industrious 3D Texture Fades Embossing Folder. I then sanded over it using the Distress Sanding Disk to reveal some of the kraft core of the paper. I then randomly applied Mushroom Alcohol Ink and used 91% Isopropyl Alcohol to spread the ink.
Next, I randomly applied white gesso to the paper and allowed that to dry. I would probably leave out the gesso if I was doing it again, as I'm not sure what difference it really made.
Once the gesso was dry, I applied embossing ink to random sections of the embossed paper, sprinkled it with Hickory Smoke Embossing Glaze and heat set it with my embossing heat tool.
To give it some more texture, I randomly applied Distress Translucent Grit Paste to sections of the paper and set it to the side to dry. Once the paste was dry, I added Sepia and Espresso Alcohol Ink and again used 91% Isopropyl Alcohol to spread the ink. And with that, the oxidized metal background was complete.
During the process, it was rather cool to see the pops of green appear. I'm guessing it came from the Mushroom Alcohol Ink, but it seemed to really be noticeable as the after the isopropyl alcohol dried on the paper.
As for the rest of the card, I die cut one of the Tim Holtz Gentlemen Dies from Black Kraftstock and sanded the edges to reveal the kraft core. I die cut a piece of Distress Heavystock using the Paper Rose Circuit Texture Die and placed this behind the gentleman. This die might just be one of my new faves!
For the sentiment, I die cut the word "happy" from Metallic Kraftstock in silver and white cardstock using the Waffle Flower Crafts Oversized Happy Set. I then adhered the layers together to create a little dimension. I gently sanded over the metallic kraftstock and then adhered the die cut to the card front.
I finished it off by stamping Father's Day from the Waffle Flower Crafts Oversized Happy Set in black ink onto a piece of Distress Heavystock. I trimmed it into a strip, inked the edges with Walnut Stain Distress Ink and adhered it to the card front using double sided foam tape.
